  • Retractable Y-shaped foils, adjustable in three dimensions

Inspired by the appendages of the America's Cup foiling monohulls, these Y-shaped foils have a wingspan of over 5 metres. They are designed to generate powerful lift, increase power and offer a wide range of adjustments to optimise flight at every point of sail and in all conditions. Beyond their impressive size, these foils feature many unique innovations.

    Revolutionary U-shaped rudders

These are probably the most visually striking innovations on the new Maxi Edmond de Rothschild. To fly high above rough seas while maintaining control, the team wanted very long rudders that would remain in contact with the water. The challenge is that longer rudders tend to flex under load, severely affecting steering and the efficiency of their lifting surfaces. A new geometry was needed to give these appendages maximum stiffness, resist cavitation and ultimately improve control of the boat and make better use of its power. The result is a set of U-shaped rudders over 4 metres long, a metre longer than those on Gitana 17. Their shape, reminiscent of a tripod or an inverted π, is only the visible part of what makes them so distinctive.

A daggerboard optimised to stabilise the boat and limit cavitation

With its wide span, the daggerboard resembles an aircraft tail assembly, with two adjustable flaps: one on the vertical section and the other on the horizontal section, the distinctive “manta-ray wing”. On Gitana 18, the innovation is to position this wing behind the vertical part of the appendage, rather than directly beneath it, to minimise flow disturbance and cavitation.

Rig: adjustable spreaders to control mainsail power while sailing

Gitana 18’s mast is 1.50 metres taller than its predecessor’s. The boom is also shorter, creating a more slender sail plan. The major innovation is a set of spreaders that can be adjusted while sailing to bend the mast fore and aft. Actuated by hydraulic rams, these spreaders can pivot through 35 degrees to adjust the bend in the middle of the mast. This unprecedented system allows the sailor to control mainsail power: adding depth in light winds to take off sooner, or flattening the sail to reduce power at high speed or in strong winds. Adjusting the depth, and therefore the power, of the mainsail can also save a solo sailor time and energy by reducing the need for risky manoeuvres or headsail changes.

    Central hull:
    an integrated, structural coachroof

The naval architects and Gitana design team wanted an exceptionally stiff, structurally robust platform. This applies both to the floats, which must withstand heavy loads from the foils and rudders, and to the central hull, which is subject to torsion. The enclosed coachroof is integrated into the hull and contributes to its structural strength. Inside, the cockpit brings all sail-handling controls together, with ergonomics shaped by many hours of design and development. The coachroof also stands out for the number and size of its windows. This configuration meets the visibility requirements of the Ultim class rules and gives sailors the best possible view to keep a visual watch.

For the Gitana Team’s second season running two trimarans in the championship, the results have greatly improved. The team has demonstrated its ability to optimise and develop its platforms, crew cohesion and conviviality have been enhanced. Mission accomplished for Gitana X and its crew of bright young things and for Gitana 11 finishing the year in second place of the Championship thanks to a fine second place in the Transat Jacques Vabre and incisive runs in the Grands Prix.

Groupama-2 is one of the latest generation trimarans and is very much at home in light air which dominated this season. Gitana 11 managed to make her mark on 5 occasions making Frédéric Le Peutrec the closest direct opponent for Franck Cammas on this type of race! The young talent on Gitana X progressed constantly and healthy results were achieved for a boat which was designed for sailing in a bit of a breeze. The last race of the season showed quite how determined the team is. Difficult conditions combined with technical problems, but both Gitana rallied the port of Salvador de Bahia, finishing 2nd and 4th.

The Baron Benjamin de Rothschild rounds off the season with the acquisition of Gitana 12, ex-Bonduelle, a trimaran designed in the same spirit as Gitana 11 by architects Marc van Peteghem & Vincent Loriot Prévost.

Thierry Duprey du Vorsent, skipper – Gitana X :

« I was launching out into the great unknown as this was my first year as skipper of an ORMA trimaran. I’m quite pleased with the season as a whole. It is not as easy as you might think heading up a shore-based team and crew of sailors. We have always got along well with each other. Relations have always been highly positive. From a sports point of view, the fact that we have mixed young newcomers and more experienced sailors on Gitana X has meant that we have been able to progress as the months have gone by. I’ve learnt a lot not only as team coordinator but also in racing terms as I was not familiar with the Grand Prix type of racing. I’d like to thank the team for having supported me, encouraged and shouldered me throughout the year in difficult situations. We’ve all gained in confidence and experience. Weather conditions were only favourable to our boat at the very start and finish of the season in Calvi and Lorient. Our circuit performance was not bad at all, from a sporting point of view and a human point of view. »

Frédéric Le Peutrec, skipper – Gitana 11 :

« Obviously we’re pleased with this season’s results. Second overall in the Championship and second in the Transat Jacques Vabre, our number one objective given its difficulty. On every score, racing offshore or in the Grand Prix, Gitana 11 was pretty efficient and the counter-performances are generally the result of exacerbated competition out on the course. Throughout the season, we’ve been able to pinpoint the shortcomings we were already suspicious about and which will be taken care of by next season. Restricted evolvability, difficulty in rotating and in picking up speed at the start, poor performance in light air. The sailing team was put together on a fine cocktail of skill, each settling into his rightful place as the year went on. Our ambition at the start of the season was to be present on the podium at each event and although we didn’t win any race, we did win a few rounds ! Groupama-2 has always had a little plus in light air and in the blow in the last Grand Prix in Lorient, she did not win a single one of the last four rounds. Just goes to show that the whole fleet has managed to make good its shortfall in potential against the most recent of the ORMA trimarans.  Judging by her performance in the Transat Jacques Vabre, there is every chance that she will lose her aggressive edge as the others are gradually optimised for light air sailing. All in all, the Gitana Team is in a strong position for the season ahead. Can’t wait for next year to come round ! »
