  • Retractable Y-shaped foils, adjustable in three dimensions

Inspired by the appendages of the America's Cup foiling monohulls, these Y-shaped foils have a wingspan of over 5 metres. They are designed to generate powerful lift, increase power and offer a wide range of adjustments to optimise flight at every point of sail and in all conditions. Beyond their impressive size, these foils feature many unique innovations.

    Revolutionary U-shaped rudders

These are probably the most visually striking innovations on the new Maxi Edmond de Rothschild. To fly high above rough seas while maintaining control, the team wanted very long rudders that would remain in contact with the water. The challenge is that longer rudders tend to flex under load, severely affecting steering and the efficiency of their lifting surfaces. A new geometry was needed to give these appendages maximum stiffness, resist cavitation and ultimately improve control of the boat and make better use of its power. The result is a set of U-shaped rudders over 4 metres long, a metre longer than those on Gitana 17. Their shape, reminiscent of a tripod or an inverted π, is only the visible part of what makes them so distinctive.

A daggerboard optimised to stabilise the boat and limit cavitation

With its wide span, the daggerboard resembles an aircraft tail assembly, with two adjustable flaps: one on the vertical section and the other on the horizontal section, the distinctive “manta-ray wing”. On Gitana 18, the innovation is to position this wing behind the vertical part of the appendage, rather than directly beneath it, to minimise flow disturbance and cavitation.

Rig: adjustable spreaders to control mainsail power while sailing

Gitana 18’s mast is 1.50 metres taller than its predecessor’s. The boom is also shorter, creating a more slender sail plan. The major innovation is a set of spreaders that can be adjusted while sailing to bend the mast fore and aft. Actuated by hydraulic rams, these spreaders can pivot through 35 degrees to adjust the bend in the middle of the mast. This unprecedented system allows the sailor to control mainsail power: adding depth in light winds to take off sooner, or flattening the sail to reduce power at high speed or in strong winds. Adjusting the depth, and therefore the power, of the mainsail can also save a solo sailor time and energy by reducing the need for risky manoeuvres or headsail changes.

    Central hull:
    an integrated, structural coachroof

The naval architects and Gitana design team wanted an exceptionally stiff, structurally robust platform. This applies both to the floats, which must withstand heavy loads from the foils and rudders, and to the central hull, which is subject to torsion. The enclosed coachroof is integrated into the hull and contributes to its structural strength. Inside, the cockpit brings all sail-handling controls together, with ergonomics shaped by many hours of design and development. The coachroof also stands out for the number and size of its windows. This configuration meets the visibility requirements of the Ultim class rules and gives sailors the best possible view to keep a visual watch.

    GITANA, ENTERING INTO THE LEGEND.

On 21 September 1876, baroness Julie de Rothschild inaugurated her auxiliary schooner, La Gitana, on Lake Geneva where she smashed the speed record. Back then, nobody suspected that this passion for on-the-water competitiveness would continue through to the modern day in the Franco-Swiss line of the Rothschild family. As such, in 2016, Ariane and Benjamin are celebrating a quite unique maritime-themed family saga, 140 years of daring, performance and human adventure through the legendary history of the Gitana fleet. It’s a name that conjures up the image of a line of boats, which has constantly defied both time and technology. In order to mark this anniversary in style and reflect on what has been an exceptional season of sport, whilst also making the most of the Mono60 Edmond de Rothschild’s participation in the prestigious Vendée Globe, Gitana Team’s owners were keen to create a travelling exhibition in order to share their maritime heritage with as many people as possible and present today’s sailing as one of tomorrow’s challenges.

Christened Gitana, entering into the legend, this creative and recreationalinstallation is a genuine invitation to travel, which is structured around themes that are accessible to adults and children alike. Relying on a contemporary, minimalist set design, which showcases the aesthetic quality so cherished by those who have created the saga, this exhibition aims to recount the Gitana epic penned by five generations of Rothschilds. Through the prism of this pioneering, iconic family, the visitor is transported behind the scenes of the evolution in watersports and competition from the 19th century through to the present day. To achieve this, the public will be able to feast their eyes on artefacts, architectural pieces, ancient and contemporary photographs, as well as a wealth of multimedia content in a space spanning some 200m2.

    Museography straddling history and modernity

    – Gallery retracing the history of the Rothschild generations involved in the evolution of the Gitana fleet and incorporating an exclusive tour of the family artefacts.

    – A 1:1 scale model of the cockpit of the Mono60 Edmond de Rothschild’s, the monohull skippered by Sébastien Josse for the Vendée Globe 2016-2017 (start on 6 November)

    – Material staging by the members of Gitana Team of foils and other prototype parts used on the racing stable’s current boats.

    – Immersive space enabling the public to sail aboard the latest Gitana boats using virtual reality (360° immersive video)

    – Kids’ space

    – Video screenings giving viewers an insight into the offshore competition and racing world

    – Discovery of the mobile application all about the exhibition

The three key dates for the exhibition

GENEVA – From 14 to 25 September in Port Noir, Geneva

SABLES D’OLONNE – From 15 October to 6 November in the Vendée Globe race village in Les Sables d’Olonne

PARIS – From 3 to 11 December at the International Paris Boat Show

Gitana, entering into the legend: free exhibition, open to all and bilingual (French – English).

    AN AUTUMN BOOK

In conjunction with the exhibition, Gitana Team’s owners are preparing a beautiful book published by La Martinière publications in the autumn of 2016. The fruit of extensive research, this work, Gitana, 140 years of Rothschild yachting history, presents the personal archives of this pioneering family with a wealth of hitherto unpublished content, which will showcase the daring and modernity of this remarkable saga.
